Using MyWebServer To Host Your Music On The Internet

MyWebServer turns your DSL/Cable/Broadband equipped computer into a web site you can use to host your bands information, pictures and music on the World Wide Web. All without paying any hosting charges at all. This is especially important if you are on a low budget and cant afford to pay the extra transfer or bandwidth charges imposed by most hosting providers if a lot of people decide to download your music. It works best with a static IP address but it also works very nicely with a Dynamic IP address (Not all Broadband suppliers offer Static IP addresses). If your stuck with a Dynamic IP address you can use your Free Web Server space (offered by most ISPs) and MyWebServers Virtual DNS feature to give you a static named internet address for your site.

A static IP address (a number like 22.33.44.55) or a static internet address (words like members.aol.com/yourbandname) allows you to register your bands web site with band registry services like Bands R Us.

You can also have your own domain name (dot com like www.yourbandname.com) hosted by the MyWebServer program running on your computer. If you get your DSL service from Direct TV DSL you can have your domain name directed to your computer or to the free web space that comes with your DSL connection. This way you can have all of your bands information and graphics coming from your free web space but have your music and downloads come from your computer. If you don't get Direct TV DSL service you can still have your domain name point to MyWebServer running on your computer using a web forwarding service like the one provided by Network Solutions / Verisign. It only costs $12 per year when you buy a domain name for $29 per year.

This is a very nice way to go. It includes a Web Site with 10 MB of storage space Hosted by Direct TV at your domain name. Your DSL connection is thru a static IP address which is really important. If your music files are too big to fit in your hosted web site you can put your music files on your PC and run MyWebServer to host your music over your DSL connection.

You can also use MyWebServer with any DSL/Cable/Broadband connection to host your bands web site on the internet. You should try to get a broadband connection that comes with a static Ip address if you possibly can. This will simplify your setup and insure that your web site is always available.

Even if you cant get a static IP address most ISPs will include some free web space with your service. You will get a static domain name (which includes your email address) for your web site so if you get an email address with your band name in it your internet address might look like. home.att.net/yourbandname

You can use this address and MyWebServer's Virtual DNS feature to have tghat address point to the MyWebServer program running on your computer.

You can register the static IP address or static internet address with a band Registry like BandsRUs and your all set.

You can even get your own domain name (dot com) and web forwarding service. This service allows you to have your own domain name and have it forwarded to MyWebServer running on your PC or your free web space thus eliminating your Internet Service Providers name from your address all for a mere $12 per year (when purchased with a $29 domain name).

There are lots of DSL suppliers out there. The most important technical factors to look for are:
1 Do they give you a static IP address or not. (static is highly preferred) ? (optional with some not available with some)
2 Do they give you some web space with your service ? (optional with some)
3 Can the web space be accessed by your registered domain name ? (optional with some)
4. What type of internet connection do they have (all their customers share it) ?
